What electric car grants are there in the UK?

If you’re considering a used EV, you might’ve heard about the grants that can help support the switch to electric.

The UK government has continued to push the change from cars with internal combustion engines (ICE) to EVs and wants all cars to be 100% zero emission by 2035.

As a result, there are several grants available – but they can get confusing. Some are no longer running, some have just launched, and others are just in the discussion phase.

If you’re weighing up charging costs or trying to work out how much you’ll be paying to run an electric car, CarSupermarket.com’s experts are here to help.

In this guide, we’ll take you through all the grants available to individuals, businesses, and local authorities in the UK – all of which may lead to the cost of an EV being much more affordable than you might expect.

What is the EV charger grant?

As of January 2025, the government’s EV charger grant – also known as the electric vehicle chargepoint grant – is available for renters, flat owners, and landlords.

This grant lets you reduce the cost of buying and installing a home EV charger by £350 or 75%, whichever is lower.

To qualify, the charger must be installed by an approved installer, as set out by the government’s Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV).

Keep in mind, you can’t claim the grant if you’ve already used any other EV chargepoint grant in the past.

Electric vehicle chargepoint grant for renters or flat owners

You can apply for the electric vehicle chargepoint grant if you live in a flat that you own (including flats bought through the shared ownership scheme) or rent a residential property.

You must also own (or have the legal right to) off-street parking that’s private and accessible to you at all times

You’ll also need to double check that your EV is on the government's list of OZEV-approved electric vehicles. You either must be the registered owner of the vehicle, leased it or used it as a work vehicle for at least six months, or currently have one on order.

You can read the full eligibility criteria for renters or flat owners for the electric vehicle chargepoint grant on the UK government website.

Electric vehicle chargepoint and infrastructure grants for landlords

You can also apply for the electric vehicle chargepoint grant if you’re a residential landlord with property to let, or a commercial landlord.

You can apply for flats and houses, apartment blocks, and commercial properties.

The parking space where the charging point will be installed must be off-street, private, and accessible to your tenant.

For commercial landlords, the chargepoint can only be used by the building’s staff and vehicles – not members of the public.

There are extra requirements if you’re applying for an EV infrastructure grant. This covers work on at least five parking spaces at a property with multiple homes – like an apartment block or an estate with a shared car park.

You can read the full eligibility criteria for landlords for the electric vehicle chargepoint and infrastructure grants on the UK government website.

Is there an EV chargepoint grant for homeowners?

As of February 2025, there aren’t any EV chargepoint grants for homeowners. Previously, homeowners could take advantage of the electric vehicle homecharge scheme (EVHS).

However, the EVHS was replaced by the electric vehicle chargepoint grant in April 2022, and this doesn’t currently cover homeowners.

Are there any grants for electric company cars?

While there isn’t a grant for electric company cars, there are significant tax benefits.

You’ll pay the lowest rate of Benefit in Kind (BiK) - a yearly tax when a company car is used for personal use as well as work – if you opt for an EV.
