Are These The Best Driving Tunes Ever?

Wed 8th Jun 2022

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their classic Civic model, Honda motors have polled more than 2,000 motorists to find the all-time best driving songs of the last 50 years.

The advent of streaming options within cars has added all sorts of playlist possibilities to a car journey, so while Grandma and Grandad might have had to listen to the radio in the 70s, mum and dad forced to listen to a mixtape in the 80s, friends and family listened to CDs in the 90s, while we all might have plugged out iPod into the aux cable in 2000s, streaming through apps such as Spotify is now where it is at.

Honda’s research found that almost half (48%) saw their mood lifted by music in the car, while four in ten said a good playlist helped them relax while driving. Almost a quarter (24%) said music helped them focus, and 22 per cent said a good tune gave them energy.

With the help of Magic FM DJ Simon Phillips, the playlist has some classic tunes, beginning with Alice Cooper’s ‘School’s Out’ from 1972, the year of the Civic’s launch to a more recent hit, Starlight by Dave.

The public vote also saw a winning tune for each decade, with Stevie Wonder’s Superstition from the 70s joining Prince (Raspberry Beret - 80s), House of Pain (Jump Around - 90s), Justin Timberlake (Cry Me a River - 00s), Adele (Rolling in the Deep - 10s) and Elton John & Dua Lipa (Cold Heart 20s).

Speaking about the importance of music on a car journey, Simon said: “I think first and foremost, a perfect driving track makes you, the car and the road one.

“It makes the traffic go away and complements the driving experience, when that song plays, it draws you in, and for that moment, it's the ultimate connection you, your car and music.

“Driving for me is one of the most personal spaces, and the driving environment can really influence our mood. A great driving song helps to mentally prepare you for the journey ahead, and to savour a moment.”
