Banksy Truck Set To Sell For £1.5m

Mon 2nd Sep 2019

A former circus truck with a rather unique paint job is set to attract record bids at auction this week.

The ‘Turbo Zone Truck’ is a 1988 Volvo FL6 HGV, which would probably have been destined for the scrap heap had it not fallen into the hands of world-renowned graffiti artist Banksy. The controversial and anonymous street artist was gifted the truck in 2000 and gave it its unusual decoration over two weeks after beginning the job at a millennium party in Spain.

The truck then continued its international circus touring around the globe, across both Europe and South America.

Entitled ‘Turbo Zone Truck (Laugh Now But One Day We’ll Be In Charge)’ it features a man smashing a TV using a large hammer, flying monkeys and soldiers running away from a cannon. The truck also comes with two Banksy signatures to confirm authenticity.

It will go under the hammer at the Goodwood Revival event in Chichester later this month.

“Banksy is arguably the most important artist to have emerged since the millennium and this, his largest commercial work, represents a new high watermark of quality for works of his to appear at auction,” said Ralph Taylor from Bonhams.

“The composition bears all the hallmarks of this peerless agent provocateur.

“Bonhams is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue offering the best of his work at auction as we have done consistently for well over a decade.”

A Volvo without the famous paintwork from 1988 would expect to fetch no more than a few thousand pounds.
