Black is back as the most popular car colour

Fri 19th Jan 2018

The latest industry figures show that, when it comes to British car buyers, black is back!

The darkest shade reclaimed the top spot for the first time since 2012 by assuming a 20% market share of new registrations last year.

White - top dog for the past four years - has now dropped down to third place behind grey.

In all, the three most popular colours occupied a 59% market share of all new cars sold in 2017 with fourth placed blue taking 16%.

Given that the same top four colours have shuffled about in order for four consecutive years, they continue to dominate used cars sales too.

Broken down regionally, buyers in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern England still preferred buying white vehicles. However, black cars dominated in the  heavily-populated South and West Midlands.

Silver - which topped the sales figures for eight consecutive years between 2000 and 2008 - now only accounts for 10% of the market.

Of the niche colours, figures show there is a growing demand for bronze, gold, pink and turquoise but brown and beige both experienced big falls.
