More than 5,000 road users have contributed to a survey aimed at finding out which of Britain’s motorways and A roads provide the best driver satisfaction.

Taking a long trip on a motorway not often a pleasant experience, with the risk of roadworks, congestion and a lack of eye-catching scenery, but the analysis from Transport Focus has found that some stretches of highway rank better than others.

The survey focused on a number of factors for motorists, including overall satisfaction, journey time, how well road works are managed and quality of the road surface. The M40, which stretches from Birmingham to London came top in the survey, with an impressive score of 79 per cent, beating the A14 (78%) and the A3 (78%). The main praise for the M40 was the quality of the road surface, while other user praised the motorway for being the ‘quietest and easiest’ to use.

At the other end of the scale, and the A1 performed the worst in the Transport Focus poll, with users complaining about the many road works and the very, very slow moving traffic.

“England's motorways and major A-roads are its arteries, allowing people and goods to be moved around efficiently,” said Anthony Smith, chief executive of Transport Focus.

“These results show that what drivers experience varies from road to road, with journey time and how busy it is being key to journey satisfaction.

“As the summer getaway begins, this survey shows the importance of National Highways striving to minimise hold ups and providing good information so drivers know what to expect if it will be busy.

“And it points to the ongoing need to focus on delivering roadworks with the least disruption possible, as well as keeping road surfaces in good condition.”
