Dacia Spring Set For UK Launch?

Mon 30th May 2022

One of Europe’s biggest budget car brands looks set to add another model to its UK line-up with bosses suggesting that a compact SUV might be amongst the cheapest in the country.

Romanian brand Dacia are already winning lots of fans for their no-nonsense, low-spec models such as the Duster, Sandero and recently launched Jogger. But the British public were somewhat miffed when their smaller SUV, the Dacia Spring, wasn’t launched in Britain, despite that fact that the EV had been on sale in Europe since early 2021. An official UK launch announcement was anticipated in January of this year, but that date came and went, and there remains silence on any planned launch, on what might be the most affordable EV on the market, if it does finally get a launch date.

Speaking to Autocar magazine, Dacia’s UK brand director Luke Broad admitted that the Spring will arrive eventually, but with supply-chain issues across the world, it is a tricky environment for new launches of any vehicle.

“We are fighting tooth and nail with our corporate team to get that car launched here in the UK,” Broad said in this week’s Autocar.

"We don't have confirmation whether it's a go yet, because they're working on fulfilling the huge back order they have in Europe - for me that's another string to my bow; if it's an extremely popular car in Europe, then it's fair to say it will also be extremely popular in the UK.

"There's no decision on Spring. Hopefully we get it, but in the meantime we will hybridise the Jogger and in the medium- to long-term, you will start to see the hybridisation and electrification of the brand - but only when the customers are ready and it makes sense from a cost perspective."

The news will come as a boost for those budget car buyers. Dacia’s Sandero had previously held the honour of cheapest new car in the UK, but that title now belongs to the Kia Picanto. Many observers lamenting that the cheapest car is now more than £10k to drive away from the showroom.
