Driving Tests To Return This Week

Mon 20th Jul 2020

Learner drivers who have been waiting patiently to take their driving exam will finally be able to get back behind the wheel this week as the government approved driving tests to recommence.

The practical test will return from Wednesday 22nd July, with those who had already booked and had their exams postponed getting the chance to sit their test this week. Tests have been suspended since the 20th of March due to lockdown regulations, with only critical workers allowed to sit a practical exam in order that they can commute safely.

According to data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) there could be up to half a million learner drivers keen to get their practical exam completed. Learners have been allowed to recommence driving lessons since 4th July which suggests that there may be plenty of rookie drivers keen to get on the road.

The test has been revised to reflect social distancing guidelines, meaning that if a learner commits a  serious or dangerous fault the test will terminated immediately and the driver will have to return to the test centre. This rule has been brought in to reduce unnecessary contact time between the driver and the invigilator.

DVSA chief driving Examiner Mark Winn said: “I know many learners are keen to take their driving test but it is vital they have the right skills and knowledge to help them through a lifetime of safe driving before attempting it.

“Anyone who is rebooking or taking a test should make sure they've had enough practice with a professional driving instructor and are ready.

“Learners should practice driving on a variety of roads and in different driving conditions so they are well prepared for driving independently.”
