A strong month of car sales in the UK has seen Ford dominate the market yet again, with two of the top three most popular cars driven off the forecourts.
An impressive 192,649 new cars were sold in May, a figure up 3.4% on the same month last year, although the market still has some way to catch-up with the annual total down 7%.
The Ford Fiesta is again the best seller, both in terms of new sales and used car sales. With almost 7,000 new Fiestas on the roads in May, it led its rival the Volkswagen Golf and was joined by stablemate, Ford Focus in the top three. The Focus is expected to make a surge of sales during the summer when the all-new 2018 marque will go on sale.
Another vehicle expected to perform strongly during the summer months is the Mercedes A-Class, though it was the ninth best selling new car in May, the new-generation of A-Class will only be arriving with customers this month and that is likely to spike a surge in sales.
The biggest fallers in the list were Fiat and Nissan. Fiat’s 500 may have been the top of many lists when it was launched 10 years ago, but the Italian model looks to have fallen out of fashion with a slump in sales of 36%. Nissan also saw a dramatic drop, with sales declining by 18 per cent, and things aren’t much better for the company’s luxury brand, Infiniti, which has seen a staggering 80 per cent drop.
Though Vauxhall don’t figure in the top five of car sales, they are still very popular on the used market. Ford’s Fiesta and Focus hold the top two spots, but the most recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), tells us that the Corsa and Astra are doing well, the Volkswagen Golf rounds off the top five.
