Ford Party On As Fiesta Tops Best Sellers List Again

Mon 6th Jan 2020

The Ford Fiesta ruled the roost once again for 2019 with the figures for the year showing that the supermini was the most popular car in Britain.

According to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the Fiesta was way out in front in terms of sales, with 77,833 sold, compared to its nearest rival, the Volkswagen Golf which had 58,994 registrations.

Ford almost claimed a historic one-two at the top of the charts, but the Focus fell just short with 56,619 registrations. The evergreen Corsa came in fourth spot while the luxury manufacturers were represented by the Mercedes-Benz A-Class which came in fifth with respectable sales of 53k.

The SMMT says the new car market in Britain is one of the most diverse, with 350 models on offers and though sales of new cars were down in 2019, the market remains the second largest behind Germany.

Though the Ford Fiesta has been the best selling car of all time in Britain, it is sure to see some serious competition in 2020, with up to 90 new models launched over the next 12 months, including 23-zero-emission cars - will we see an EV break the top ten by this time next year?

Speaking to an SMMT spokesperson said: “The top five best-selling cars in 2019 were all superminis or other small cars, representing more than half of all registrations and demonstrating their enduring popularity.

“The latest-generation models are cleaner, safer and more sophisticated than ever, and, with plenty of attractive deals on offer, it means there’s never been a better time to buy a new car.”
