Hyundai’s innovative EV crossover, the IONIQ 5, has been named the World Car of the Year, adding the accolade to the UK Car of the Year prize it won earlier in 2022.

The Korean car brand collected the prize at the New York International Auto Show, after a jury of 102 automotive journalists from 33 different countries awarded the crossover, Hyundai’s first in their dedicated BEV IONIQ lineup.

Judges were impressed with the IONIQ 5’s ultra-fast charging capabilities for a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 18 minutes and highly spacious interior. The car beat off competition from the Ford Mustang Mach-e and the Kia EV6 on the final three-car shortlist.

It was a night of huge celebraton for Hyundai, with the IONIQ 5 also winning the World Electric Vehicle and the World Car Design prizes, while chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke was named World Car Person of the Year.

“We are truly honored to receive these prestigious awards, which recognize the talent and hard work of all our people and business partners at Hyundai Motor Company,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of the Hyundai Motor Company. “Our vision is to enable Progress for Humanity, and this endorsement of our approach will serve to embolden our commitment to make this vision a reality.

“IONIQ 5 represents a pivotal achievement for us as we pioneer a new generation of smart mobility solutions with our innovative E-GMP platform technologies, exceptional performance and disruptive approach to design and space.”

It is the second year in succession that an EV has won the World Car of the Year prize, following on from the Volkswagen ID.4 claiming the title last year.
