A new survey has revealed that drivers of BMWs are the most dangerous on UK roads with the owners of the German marque most likely to speed, run a red light or make an at fault insurance claim.
The research has been conducted by GoCompare Car Insurance, who found that the BMW 420D is the most likely culprit according to their own data with one in six (17.1%) BMW 4 Series drivers have at least one driving conviction, a figure twice the national average across all models.
German luxury motors make up eight of the ten worst offending cars on GoCompare’s list with only the Jaguar XF and Land Rover range interrupting the German dominance.
At the other end of the scale, it looks like drivers of cars from the Far East are the safest drivers. Sixty per cent of cars in the bottom ten least convictions are from either Japan or Korea, though the Vauxhall Agila is deemed the safest of all.
It’s bad news all round for the BMW 420D, as well as their drivers having the most convictions, they also have the most claims, in a top ten list which is again dominated by German marques.
“While it may be no surprise that higher-powered, luxury cars are the marques of choice for some of the more dangerous drivers on the road, it’s not true of all owners of these makes,” said Matt Oliver of GoCompare.
“What is more worrying is the large number of these cars on the road right now. According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), BMW, Mercedes and Audi all feature among the top ten most popular cars of 2018.
“Typically, many of the cars listed in our top ten lists will be driven by those commuting or driving for longer periods on the motorway, at peak times in highly built-up areas, increasing the risk of an accident or motoring conviction.
“Claiming on insurance when you’re at-fault is likely to result in the cost of your car insurance rocketing, more so than other claims, as you will be deemed a higher-risk driver.”
