Jaguar Land Rover is partnering with the team behind Google’s self-driving car project to set up a driverless transportation service in the USA.
Waymo will take Jaguar’s all-electric I-Pace SUV and fit it with it production ready self-driving technology in up to 20,000 vehicles.
The new vehicles will undergo trials initially, with reliability and safety data made available to both Waymo and JLR to help development of the self-driving technology and also the progress of I-Pace.
Waymo will launch the world’s first self-driving transportation service later this year. Those wanting to use the service will use their smartphone to ‘request’ a car which will taxi them to their chosen destination. It is believed that the I-Paces will be added to Waymo’s existing fleet following trials, with the former Google company ambitiously aiming to deliver one million driverless car journeys per day following launch.
The partnership between the two companies will officially begin in 2020 and will continue for eight years, four years supplying cars and four years of maintenance and repairs.
Jaguar Land Rover CEO, Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth, said: “With the Jaguar I-Pace we have a world-beating car that’s captured the imagination of customers around the world. Our passion for further advancing smart mobility needs expert long-term partners. In joining forces with Waymo we are pioneering to push the boundaries of technology. Together we will deliver the self-driving Waymo Jaguar I-Pace with the grace, space and eco-pace that customers expect.”
John Krafcik, Waymo CEO, added: “While we've been focused at Waymo on building the world's most experienced driver, the team at Jaguar Land Rover has developed an all-new battery-electric platform that looks to set a new standard in safety, design and capability. We're sure Waymo riders will enjoy the safe, premium and delightful experience that the self-driving I-Pace will provide.”
