Jaguar’s Electric I-Pace Readies To Take On Tesla

Thu 1st Mar 2018

If we’ve got the Nissan Leaf at one end of the electric car spectrum, what have we got at the other? What is the luxury vehicle that the Green Party candidates should be driving down Downing Street if the country ever gets environmentally conscious – step forward the Jaguar I-Pace.

With zero-emissions, all-wheel drive and an all-electric engine, the British luxury sport car has truly arrived on the electric platform. From 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, there is nothing held back in terms of engine spec, especially with a top speed of 124mph. Driving at those speeds though it will be interesting to see how much of the promised 298 mile range can be achieved.

“Jaguar’s engineering and design teams have torn up the rule book to create a bespoke electric architecture, matched with dramatic design. The result is a no-compromise smart, five seat sports car and a performance SUV in one,” said official blurb when it was revealed in November 2016.

But what is it really like up against the existing beasts of the electric vehicle world? Comparisons with the Tesla and Audi’s electric E-tron come naturally. So it’s only fair that Jaguar would put it up against the Tesla in a race-off.  Jaguar filmed a video of the I-Pace in action against the Tesla X75D and 100D, and it beats them both. However plenty point out that if the I-Pace had gone up against Tesla’s Model X P100D it would have been a bit of a closer competition, and many suggest the Tesla would take the checkered flag.

So what’s the price tag for a top of the range electric Jag? Even with a taxpayer-funded green subsidy of £4,500, you will still expect to pay between £58,995 and £76,995 for the top of the range version.
