Leaf Blows Away The Competition

The popularity of used cars in 2021 was higher than ever with some of the most well known car brands moving faster than ever when reaching forecourts, but what were the fastest selling used cars of the year?

According to data provided by Auto Trader’s Fastest Selling Car Index, the 2016 Nissan Leaf was the most in-demand used car of 2021, taking on average just 17 days to sell. The fact that an electric vehicle leads the list is a reflection of the continuing trend towards EVs and Hybrids, with EVs overall selling much faster than used petrol vehicles. Data from December shows that it took 26 days to sell a used EV, compared to 34 days for a petrol, surprisingly diesels only took 30 days on average, though that may be explained that the so-called dirtier engine is becoming more of a rarity on forecourts. Diesel cars dominated the top ten of Auto Trader’s index, taking six spots, with no pure petrol’s on the list. The 2016 Toyota Prius Hybrid and the 2016 Mazda CX-5 took the other places in the top three.

“It’s incredibly positive to see a pure electric at the top of the list for 2021 for just the second time in the seven years we’ve been tracking the fastest selling used cars,” said Karolina Edwards-Smajda from Auto Trader. “There’s been a real breakthrough for EVs in the UK over the last few years, but 2021 really did mark a major step forward in terms of heightened levels of demand. This was driven, in part, by the greater choice and availability of models, as well as the recent fuel shortage which helped to further accelerate consumer consideration. Although we’re still some way off EVs being financially accessible for the mass market, our data does offer another clear sign of things to come and the exciting opportunity that electric vehicles represent for the industry.”
