Mercedes Benz are proving to be the masters of the wind tunnel with the news that their latest A-Class saloon will be the most aerodynamic production car on sale to the public.
The German manufacturer already held the title with the CLA BlueEfficiency slipping through the air with the expertise of a company who has spent many a year helping Lewis Hamilton whip round F1 tracks in super-quick time.
According to the website Motoring Research, the new four-door A-Class will have a drag coefficient figure of 0.22 Cd, which combined with a compact frontal area of 2.19 metre-squared makes it the most aerodynamic. Those science boffins behind drag coefficient tells us that the lower a car’s Cd is, the less a car’s body drags through the air. As well as making the car faster it is also more economical as it uses less energy to keep it moving.
With the increase in uptake of EVs, the importance of aerodynamics is likely to be more crucial to a car’s consumption.
The all-new A-Class will go into production at the end of 2018, built at Mercedes’ factory in Mexico. But if you can’t wait for that car to slip through the showroom door, what are the cars currently on the market with the best Cd rating according to Motoring Research?
