New JLR Tech Can Stop Driver Fatigue

Jaguar Land Rover have developed a technology which can remove unwanted sounds from the cabin and prevent tiredness on long journeys.

The Active Road Noise Cancellation system will be introduced into the new Jaguar F-PACE, Jaguar XF and the new Range Rover Velar. The high-tech solution uses sensors on each wheel to monitor the vibrations of the road surface and then plays the opposite phase sound wave required to remove the noise heard by the car’s driver and passengers. The noise cancellation sound is played through the vehicle’s Meridian sound system.

Research shows that fatigue can affect the average reaction time of a driver by 16.72%, compared to those who are fully alert. The Active Road Noise Cancellation system is capable of lowering unwanted noise peaks by 10dB and overall noise levels by 3-4dB. The effect is the equivalent of turning the sound down on your stereo system by four steps.

“Active Road Noise Cancellation technology not only has the potential to improve road safety but also wellbeing and quality of life for our customers,” said Dr Steve Illey, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Medical Officer. “In a post-coronavirus world, where a ‘new normal’ is emerging, we expect customer expectations of private transport to change. An extra focus will be placed on safe, clean mobility where personal space, wellbeing and hygiene carry a premium.”
