New PM A Boost For Motorists

Tue 6th Sep 2022

Liz Truss, the UK’s newly appointed Prime Minister could provide welcome news for fans of fast cars after revealing that she could consider zero speed limits on motorways.

The PM was pushed on the issue during Tory leadership hustings last week, and was a little more non-committal, however in 2018, at the party’s conference she said that the prospect of raising the speed limit on motorways was something she would look at.

“I’d also like us to look again at things like our speed limits on the motorway. We have often toyed with the idea of raising it to 80mph, why don’t we look at that again?" the former Foreign Secretary said.

And in further good news, Truss has also revealed that she will be banning smart motorways once she moves into No.10. The government is reconsidering use of the controversial stretches of road, with a current pause on new developments.

In response to the question on whether she would ban them, she said ‘Yes’, and also said ‘the experiment has not worked’.

“I absolutely think that we need to review them and stop them if they are not working as soon as possible ... and all the evidence I have suggests they’re not working,” the Oxford-born MP said.

“We need to be prepared to look at that. I do believe that the smart motorways experiment hasn’t worked.”
