On this day in auto history – April 25th

Sun 25th Apr 2021

It was on this day in 2002 that world famous American hip-hop musician, Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes, was killed in a car crash whilst filming for a documentary in Honduras.

The most flamboyant and well-known member of the best-selling American girl group TLC, Lopes was killed instantly after a rented Mitsubishi Montero she was driving rolled into a ditch after she swerved to avoid an oncoming truck.

The seven passengers in the vehicle, including two of Lopes’ sisters, all survived the crash.

Amazingly, because a front-seat passenger was videotaping Lopes as part of an upcoming documentary, the haunting last few seconds leading up to the collision were recorded on video and have garnered millions of views on YouTube.

Just two weeks before her death, the troubled singer - convicted in 1994 for a high-profile arson attack on her then-boyfriend’s house - had been a passenger in traffic accident which resulted in the death of a 10-year-old Honduran boy who was crossing a busy street.
