On this day in auto history – April 29th

It was on this day in 2002 that the famous burgundy Jaguar MK II used by Inspector Morse in the iconic ITV series was sold at public auction for £53,000.

The vehicle, which featured in all 33 episodes of the acclaimed detective drama, was sold to an anonymous bidder in Sunderland and was in high demand following the death of Morse actor John Thaw just two months previously.

Just three years later, following some restoration work, the vehicle was sold on again for a reputed £150,000 in a sealed bid contest handled by Walker Singleton (Asset Management) which attracted over 250,000 bids from around the world.

The 1959 model which would have cost just £1,500 originally would have usually sold to collectors for around £10,000 without its television provenance.
