On this day in auto history – April 6th

Tue 6th Apr 2021

It was on this day in 1985 that the longest traffic jam in British motoring history was recorded.

Occurring between Junction 13 (Milton Keynes) and Junction 18 (Rugby) of the M1, the 40-mile tail-back was estimated to have involved over 100,000 vehicles.

Frustrated motorists were left stranded for hours in the Bank Holiday chaos which caused thousands of people to miss scheduled flights.

The primary cause of the delays? Roadworks!
