It was on this day in 1993 that Ferrucio Lamborghini - founder of the iconic marque which bears his name - passed away at the age of 76.
Born to impoverished grape farmers in northern Italy, Lamborghini’s mechanical know-how saw him initially enter the business of tractor manufacturing in the midst of Italy’s post-WWII economic boom.
He founded an automobile division in 1963 and began to specialise in high-end sports cars, initially to rapid success only for sales to plunge in the wake of the global financial downturn of 1973.
Growing increasingly disillusioned with the industrial world, Lamborghini sold off his interests in 1974 and pursued lower profile business interests for the remainder of his life, including winemaking from his estate on the shores of Lake Trasimeno.
