It was on this day in 1987 that high-profile English footballer Mick Quinn was sentenced to 21 days in prison for multiple driving offences, which included flouting a drink driving ban.

Then playing with first division Portsmouth, the heavyweight centre-forward - nicknamed ’Sumo’ due to his rotund frame - was jailed for 21 days by magistrates at Havant, Hampshire after admitting twice driving whilst disqualified; two offences of driving without insurance and another of speeding.

Magistrates were told he had been banned for drink driving in Liverpool eight months previously but had continued to use a club-sponsored car.

Quinn was able to resume his football career on his release and later enjoyed successful spells at Newcastle and Coventry before turning his attention to racehorse training on his retirement alongside work on talk radio.
