On this day in auto history - January 24th

Sun 24th Jan 2021

It was announced on this day in 2007, to the surprise of many, that the Vauxhall Astra had officially been Europe’s best selling vehicle of 2006.

First launched in 1979, Mark 5 of the popular hatch (branded Opel in Europe) had experienced a sudden surge in popularity across the continent that year to edge out traditional heavyweights, the Renault Clio, Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

In the UK, the Astra was the second best selling car behind the Ford Focus for a number of years and remains a fixture in the top 10 today.
