On this day in auto history - January 25th

Mon 25th Jan 2021

It was on this day in 2016 that – 68 years after it was launched - the final Land Rover Defender rolled off a production line at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant.

The classic steel and aluminium vehicle had transported everybody from royalty to Winston Churchill to James Bond over the decades.

However, following much soul-searching, it’s Indian owners Tata had decided that the Defender had become financially unviable due to changes in legislation.

Among a number of shocking examples put forward, it was revealed that - due to changes in safety and emission laws - it was taking 56 hours to build each vehicle compared to just 48 hours spent producing the far more complicated and profitable Discovery Sport.
