On this day in auto history - January 5th

Tue 5th Jan 2021

It was on this day in 1970 when news emerged that Keith Moon - madcap drummer of superstar rock band The Who - had accidentally ran over and killed his driver and bodyguard Neil Boland in his customised Bentley.

The tragedy occurred following a drink-fuelled incident at a Hertfordshire pub which saw Moon attempt to flee from a mob of angry skinheads following a carpark fracas.Tragically, Boland wound up underneath the Bentley in the crazy furore and was pronounced dead in hospital later that night.

A subsequent inquest ruled the death an accident but Moon - who didn’t normally drive - was charged for driving without a licence as well as drunk driving.

The incident was said to have haunted Moon for the rest of his life before his early death at the age of 32 in 1978 following an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

During his short life, Moon was no stranger to anarchic driving exploits. In 1972, he famously ’totalled’ his brand new Ferrari Dino in less than a month, while stories persist that he drove a Rolls-Royce into a half-constricted swimming pool in 1971.
