On this day in auto history - January 9th

Sat 9th Jan 2021

It was on this day in 2009 that football superstar Christiano Ronaldo miraculously emerged unscathed after famously crashing his £200,000 Ferrari into a roadside barrier in a tunnel near Manchester airport.

Then 23 and with Manchester United at the time, Ronaldo was on his way to training when the accident happened at around 10.00am.

The recently-purchased Ferrari 599 GTB was so badly damaged in the accident that, when photos began emerging of the smashed vehicle on social media, some reports were speculating that the Portuguese ace may have been killed in the smash.

It later transpired that no other vehicles were involved in the incident and, after Ronaldo was interviewed by police officers, no further action was taken.

Within a few months, Ronaldo had signed for Real Madrid in a world record transfer.
