On this day in auto history – March 11th

Thu 11th Mar 2021

It was on this day in 2013 that former British cabinet minister Chris Huhne and his ex-wife, Vicky Pryce, were both jailed following a high-profile legal case involving the illegal taking of speeding points.

The pair - who had divorced in acrimonious circumstances months earlier - were each found guilty of perverting the course of justice after a joint trial laid bare a murky saga in which Pryce had lied to save her then-husband from an impending driving ban.

Huhne - then the Energy Minister in the coalition - became the first serving cabinet minister to serve a prison sentence for 14 years.

It is believed that the high-profile nature of the case, and somewhat draconian sentence, significantly reduced the illegal practise of ‘taking’ speeding points for someone else in the UK given that earlier research had suggested the practise was widespread.
