On this day in auto history – March 4th

Thu 4th Mar 2021

On this day in 1987, elderly Scottish gent David Cooper became the oldest person to pass the Department of Transport’s driving test at the grand old age of 89.

Why the Perthshire pensioner left it so long is unclear but he will forever go down in history as the last person born in the 1800’s to obtain a licence.

The current record for the oldest person to pass a driving test is held by the former Conservative politician, Lord Renton, who did so at the age of 94 in 2003.

Renton had been a regular driver since 1934, at a time when there was no formal test in the UK. He died in 2007.
