It was on this day in 1982 that the world was rocked by the news that Princess Grace of Monaco - aka Grace Kelly - had died of her injuries from a car crash in Monaco the previous day.

The world famous, Oscar-winning actress - who retired from Hollywood aged 26 to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco - was just 52 at the time of her death which was the result of plunging her 1971 Rover P6 3500 from a steep mountain road. Doctors believed she had suffered a stroke whilst driving.

Kelly was rushed to Monaco Hospital with injuries to her brain and thorax but never regained consciousness, dying the following day. Her daughter Stephanie was in the passenger seat at the time of the crash but miraculously survived with relatively minor injuries.

The hospital in which Kelly died was later re-named the Princess Grace Hospital Centre whilst her high-profile funeral the following week was attended by numerous prominent world figures and Hollywood greats.
