On this day in auto history - September 22nd

It was on this day in 2007 that troubled popstar Britney Spears hit the headlines when police charged her for driving without a valid licence following an alleged ‘hit and run’ incident.

The then 25-year-old - notorious for her erratic lifestyle at the time - was filmed steering her customised Mercedes into a parked people-carrier in a Los Angeles parking lot before driving away.

When an accident report was filed, it transpired that Spears’ Louisiana driving licence may not have been valid in California, meaning she was facing a possible prison sentence.

The case eventually reached court a year later and - after four days of deliberation - a ‘mistrial' was declared after the Californian jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision, effectively dismissing the charges against the singer.

The high-profile incident wasn’t the only time Spears’ driving was to come under scrutiny around that time. Not only did she temporarily lose custody of her children when shocking photographs emerged of her driving with her infant son on her lap but she was also twice accused of driving into waiting paparazzi, causing injury.
