It was on this day in 2007 that Volkswagen first unveiled its eagerly-awaited new city car concept, the VW Up!.
Billed beforehand as the real new Beetle, the Up! was showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show to widespread acclaim but didn’t go into full-scale production until late 2011 with assembly lines in Slovakia, Brazil and India.
In 2012, the VW Up! fought off competition from fellow finalists, the BMW 3 Series and Porsche 911 to be named World Car of The Year and over the next three years ranked third behind the Fiat Panda and Fiat 500 when it came to European sales in the minicar segment.
Though pricier than many of its rivals despite being the cheapest car in VW’s line-up, the Up! - which underwent a facelift in 2017 - offers class-leading build quality combined with a good blend of practicality and admirable refinement.
