Qashqai Takes Safety Accolade

British motor manufacturing has received a major boost after the Nissan Qashqai, which is built in the north east of England, took the Safety Award at the 2022 What Car? Car of the Year Awards.

The Qashqai had already received the highest commendation for safety when it was named Euro NCAP Best in Class Cars 2021, where it was the highest rated ‘Small Off-Road’ vehicle. But in claiming the overall award for a prize, which is sponsored by Thatcham Research, judges have recognised the highest standards in occupant protection.

Many of Nissan’s safety features within the Qashqai come as standard, including the intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Front Emergency Braking, Rear Emergency Braking, Intelligent Cruise Control and Emergency Lane Keeping.

Speaking about the honour, Andrew Humberstone, Managing Director of Nissan Motor (GB) said: “As Nissan works towards a goal of zero emissions and zero fatalities, we are proud to produce cars that deliver outstanding levels of road safety. Naturally we are delighted that our tireless efforts in developing these important safety technologies continue to be officially recognised as setting the benchmark, not just for the class but for the whole industry. The What Car? Safety Award is a credit to the teams who have put so much effort into making the all-new Qashqai one of the safest, and most desirable cars on the road today."

In the Euro NCAP testing, the Qashqai was awarded a five-star safety rating and scored 91 per cent for both adult and child occupant protection. But it was also Nissan’s ability to avoid accidents with its innovative technology which won over the judges.

“One of the reasons that the new Nissan Qashqai is the 2022 What Car? Safety Award winner is that its overall Euro NCAP score is among the best of all the cars tested in the last 12 months,” said Steve Huntingford from What Car? “But for us it's just as significant that such safety comes in a relatively affordable family SUV, because it puts it within reach of so many drivers. The Qashqai protects its occupants in a crash just as well as some models that cost four times as much. And all trim levels come with a suite of very effective active safety systems that minimise the chances of you being involved in an accident in the first place."
