BMW fans have received a glimpse of the past and the future after the German brand unveiled a unique concept coupe which pays tribute to cars of the past, while embracing the BMW design and tech of the future. has shown off the Concept Touring Coupe, a one-off show car that is based on its Z4 roadster.

The Concept Touring Coupe was shown off over the weekend at the glitzy Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este near Lake Como, Italy. It looks like the Z3 M Coupe from the early 2000s.

While many aficionados will see similarities with the Z3 M Coupe of 20 years ago, BMW says that this idea is based on the current Z4 roadster and was inspired by a number of models, such as the 1939 328 Touring Coupe and different '02' Series models from the early 1970s that had the word ‘Touring’ in their names.

It has a long hood and a long, sloping roof in the style of a "shooting brake." The long side windows have the "Hofmeister kink," which is a classic BMW design feature found on many coupe models. It is a unique shade of brown called "Sparkling Lario," and it has silver-bronze details to make it stand out.

Inside, Poltrana Frau, an Italian leather shop, made a two-tone hide for the Concept Touring Coupe. There are things like braided leather straps and suitcase bags that were made especially for the model.

“The BMW Concept Touring Coupé celebrates the original Sheer Driving Pleasure. A highly emotional vehicle like this shows that the passion for everything that goes into driving pleasure has been essential through the ages and will be for the future,” said Domagoj Dukec, head of BMW Design.

The concept car which is unlikely to go into full production runs on the same engine as the Z4 M40i, which is a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder unit that makes 225 bhp and 500 nm of torque. It lets the car go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds.
