A British man who has achieved three Guinness World Record for economical driving has revealed how he saves £40 a month on petrol costs.
At a time when motorists across the country are facing financial hardship due to the record petrol and diesel prices, ‘Hypermiler’ Kevin Booker has explained the best ways to make the most out of the mileage when you fill your tank. Booker became an economy driving expert on his daily 70-mile round trip to work in Brecon, where he experimented with simple techniques to save between £30-£40 a month.
“It was about reading the road ahead and stuff and making sure you don’t stop at roundabouts – judging traffic lights as well so you don’t end up coming to a stop for a traffic light just for it to go green,” Booker said.
“It’s more kind of rolling up to it and keeping some speed there but not actually coming to a complete stop.
“There’s also things like looking at how much speed affected my journey times vs the efficiency of it.
“I found out by driving fractionally slower that overall your journey time is about the same, but you’re saving a significant amount of fuel.”
Kevin’s Tips
-
Remove any excess weight from the car you don't need
-
Always ensure your tyres are correctly inflated
-
Read the road ahead and try not to come to a complete stop (unless you have to)
-
Avoid harsh acceleration - Drive gently and don't drive in an erratic manner
-
Try and avoid harsh braking
-
Drive with your windows up to reduce the drag on the car
-
Switch air conditioning off
Kevin, who entered the Guinness Book of Records for his ultra-economical drive from John O’Groats to Land End also suggests that good car maintenance is a key to saving fuel.
He said: “The first thing is maintaining your vehicle, making sure the tyre pressures are right, that oil levels are correct, if it’s a fuel car.
“Tyre pressures are the thing, making sure they are in good condition. That is the key for the car side of it.”
