Say Hello To Robotaxi

Wed 1st Sep 2021

Hyundai’s award IONIQ-5 will be driving on roads without a driver in less than two years following a partnership with driverless technology leaders Motional.

The IONIQ-5 robotaxi is an SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicle that combines electrification and autonomy to provide one of the most futuristic driving experiences ever.

Motional have revealed that they will be using the futuristic Hyundai to being transporting public passengers in their robotaxi with ride hailing service Lyft in 2023. The move follows successful trials in Las Vegas and will be rolled in cities across the world.

The robotaxi combines 30 separate sensors, a combination of cameras, radars and lidar, giving the vehicle a 360-degree perception, combined with high-res images and ultra-long detection of objects for safe driving in a range of environments.

“Hyundai Motor has evolved its IONIQ 5, a battery electric vehicle built on its EV-dedicated platform, into a platform for fully autonomous vehicles,” said Woongjun Jang, Hyundai’s Head of Autonomous Driving. “For the IONIQ 5-based robotaxi, we have applied various redundancy systems, in addition to a suite of essential technologies to ensure safety and convenience of the passengers. By successfully integrating the Group’s IONIQ 5 robotaxi with Motional’s autonomous driving technology, we are proud to announce that we have achieved another important milestone on the road to the commercialization of our robotaxi.”

The robotaxi will be making its public debut at the IAA Mobility in Munich next week.
