Smart Returns With An SUV

The car brand that famously made two seater superminis fashionable has made a stunning return to motoring with a brand new SUV.

Built as the first vehicle to come from the new partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Chinese carmaker, Geely, the compact SUV was unveiled in Berlin early last week, and despite its slimmed-down shape, is still a major change from the brand’s previous sensibilities.

The model, which will be known as the #1, and aimed at the younger end of the car market is officially an electric crossover, placing it in direct competition with models such as the Vauxhall Mokka-e and the DS 3 Crossback.

“The world premiere of the smart #1 in Berlin marks another milestone on the incredible road of development we began with the brand's renewal,” said smart CEO, Tong Xiangbei As the first of the new generation all-electric product family, the all-new smart #1 is the perfect embodiment of this renewal. Now, smart has entered a new phase of full speed development, further spurred on by our Europe and China "dual-home" business strategy. Our team, working between Europe and China, are making fantastic progress, and we are extremely confident that the global market will embrace the unique, premium all-electric urban mobility experience offering from smart."

The #1 will be built in China and shipped to European shores, building on Geely’s existing Sustainable Experience Architecture, and will deliver an anticipated range of between 260 and 273 miles, with a recharge of up to 80 per cent within less than three hours.

As to be expected with a Smart car, the interior makes the most of its limited space, and comes with a sliding back ‘bench’ which can be moved to either create more leg room, or make the boot bigger. There is additional space in the 15-litre ‘Frunk’ at the front of the vehicle, which will also store charging cables.
