Japanese electronics company Sony, producers of the famous Playstation, have strengthened their commitment to motoring after establishing a partnership with Honda.
Sony shocked the motoring world in 2020 when they unveiled the Vision-S concept car, and they followed that up this year at CES with a new SUV concept, the Vision-S 02.
The agreement between Sony and Honda should underline just how seriously the electronics giant is about mobility, with the partnership almost certain to focus on electric vehicle development.
“Sony’s Purpose is to ‘fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology.’” said the President and CEO of Sony, Kenichiro Yoshida. “Through this alliance with Honda, which has accumulated extensive global experience and achievements in the automobile industry over many years and continues to make revolutionary advancements in this field, we intend to build on our vision to ‘make the mobility space an emotional one,’ and contribute to the evolution of mobility centered around safety, entertainment and adaptability.”
It’s expected that the two Japanese companies will form a new company later this year, before bringing their first EV to market in 2025. Though Honda have extensive manufacturing facilities around the world, it is not expected that these plants will be used, instead the new company will plan, design, develop and sell its own EVs, but won’t operate any manufacturing processes.
“The new company will aim to stand at the forefront of innovation, evolution and expansion of mobility around the world by taking a broad and ambitious approach to creating value that exceeds the expectations and imagination of customers,” said Honda president Toshihiro Mibe.
