Swindon Is UK’s EV Hotspot

Thu 3rd Mar 2022

Swindon’s place in motoring folklore will forever be related to the famous magic roundabout, but Wiltshire town has now claimed another landmark, after being named the UK’s number one area for electric vehicles.

Insight from the team at Volkswagen Financial Services has found that Swindon has activated more finance cases for electric vehicles than any other part of the country. Regionally the Midlands is the top area, with Stratford-upon-Avon, Tamworth and Solihull all listed in the top five locations for EV finance activations, Guildford in Surrey completes the top five.

The news comes on the back of more positive news for the EV industry according to VWFS. According to their research 26 per cent of the populous are now more likely to buy an EV, rather than use public transport (24%) or buy a petrol and diesel car (19%).

“The UK’s electric car market is in overdrive at the moment and the rapid acceleration of demand for electromobility has led to a phenomenal growth in this sector,” said Mike Todd, CEO of Volkswagen Financial Services.

“We’ve never had more EVs on our roads than we do right now, but I think the challenge in the short to medium term is to ensure that the public charging network keeps pace with the increasing popularity of electric vehicles.

“Industry leaders have reported that to meet the government’s decarbonisation targets, we need to transition from one in a hundred cars on our roads being electric, to potentially one in three in just eight years. It’s a tall order but if our data is anything to go by, I believe we are well on our way to achieving these important milestones.”

The Volkswagen analysis also reports that the number one EV they activated in 2021 was the Volkswagen ID.3, though that’s likely to be related to the VWFS being offered as a payment option at dealerships.
