An electric car has claimed a major industry award once again as Tesla’s Model 3 has been announced as UK Car of the Year for 2020.
Following in the tyretracks of the Jaguar I-Pace which won the same award 12 months earlier, the Model 3 improved upon it Executive category victory to claim the main award, ahead of two other EVs, the Kia e-Niro and the Porsche Taycan which claimed second and third place respectively.
“Game-changer is an often-overused phrase, but the Tesla Model 3 has shaken up the executive segment and got many brands thinking. Electric vehicles attract a broad spectrum of opinions, but it’s clear that with its technology, performance and range, the Model 3 is converting a lot of people, said John Challen, Director of the UK Car of the Year Awards.
“Kia should also be acknowledged for its own battery-powered prowess in the e-Niro, which pushed the Model 3 all the way – demonstrating the strength in depth of electric cars currently on the UK market.”
The Model 3 is built in the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California and has been on the market since 2017, claiming a host of other awards in that time. Popular Mechanics named the car its 2018 Car of the Year, while Automobile magazine also gave it the Design of the Year prize in the same year.
In the UK, the Model 3 claimed last year’s Car of the Year named by Auto Express magazine, and was the 2020 Car of the Year as named by Parkers magazine.
