Traffic cops in Canada are astounded after stopping a Tesla driver and his passenger asleep while the car travelled in excess of the speed limit.
The incident happened this week after the Royal Canadian Mounted police responded to a call saying that a Model S Tesla was speeding on the highway. The police found the car and witnessed both driver and passenger reclining despite the car breaking the speed limit. After the flashing their lights at the car, amazingly the Tesla increased its speed to ‘exactly’ 150km/h. The speed limit on most of Canada’s motorway network is 110km/h.
“The car appeared to be self-driving, traveling over 140km/h, with both front seats completely reclined and both occupants appearing to be asleep,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“Although manufacturers of new vehicles have built-in safeguards to prevent drivers from taking advantage of the new safety systems in vehicles, those systems are just that – supplemental safety systems.
“They are not self-driving systems. They still come with the responsibility of driving.”
The 20-year-old driver was given a speeding ticket and also banned from driving for 24 hours for driving while fatigued. He will also appear in court later this year charged with dangerous driving.
In January, a driver from Ontario was charged with reckless driving after being spotted flossing his teeth with no hands on the wheel. Late last year a Tesla was spotted driving on the wrong side of the road in British Columbia driving without a driver.
