The Cars That Money Can’t Buy – Vauxhall XVR

Wed 7th Feb 2018

Sometimes your cheque book won’t stretch to purchasing your dream motor. But don’t worry too much, there are some cars that even the biggest bank balances can’t buy, the dream cars that will forever remain a dream. These are the concept cars that never get made.

Vauxhall’s ‘concept’ cars have often been the butt of many a joke. They don’t often do sexy or sleek dream cars, more often they are the very definition of ugly. But the Vauxhall XVR was very much an exception to the rule.

Named the XVR, due to it being an Experimental Vauxhall Research car, it caught the imagination of all those lucky enough to witness its debut at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show.

It’s looks were more than superficial though, it’s power under the bonnet not really matching it’s sleek design. A paltry 100bhp on offer, and a top speed of 100mph, which was nice, but not spectacular in the swinging sixties.

But, if speed is not your only high then the looks, utilising the ‘mini Mako Shark’ bodywork, made this a ‘want’ of many car enthusiasts. The long nose, holds the engine, and that length allows for the XVR to be considered a mid-engine model.

Sadly, the only road-going version of the XVR went to the great scrap-yard in sky and sits alongside a long list of cars we can only ever dream of purchasing.
