The Cars That Money Can’t Buy – Volkswagen Aqua

Sun 10th Jun 2018

Sometimes your wallet won’t stretch to purchasing your dream motor. But don’t worry too much, there are some cars that even the biggest bank balances can’t buy, the dream cars that will forever remain a dream. These are the concept cars that never go into production.

Volkswagen Aqua
Created by Yuhan Zhang, a 21 year-old designer from China, the Aqua was designed to deal with a variety of terrain which was typical of the Chinese environment, including snow, roads, wetlands and even lakes.

Zhang had designed the concept as as the entry in Volkswagen’s CDN Car Design Awards, under the simple brief of ‘Chinese off-road vehicle’. With a honors degree in Industrial Design, Zhang was perfectly placed to make an entry and it was no surprise when his entry was shortlisted.

Based with a hovercraft very much at the heart of the design, the Aqua comes with more than one engine, and with a nod to the future includes a hydrogen fuel cell motor, which drives the main fan which inflates the rubber skirt around the vehicle. Electric motors at the rear of the vehicle then provide the forward thrust once the Aqua is raised above the ground.

Whilst this concept car can float on water and drive on land, it still has impressive power and is said to be able to reach a top speed of 62mph, which would feel quite exhilarating when swooping across a swamp.

These speeds are merely guesswork though, unlike many of the concept vehicles produced, this one hasn’t even made it to the factory floor for a demo model, and remains simple computer generated designs. But Zhang is confident the vehicle can be a success.

He said: "There is no better form of transport than an air cushion vehicle because it travels equally well over land, ice and water," commented Ms Yuhan. "I hope Aqua will become an affordable supercar that is available to the general public one day."
