Land Rover Freelander
A classic from the British car manufacturer, which was in production for almost twenty years before being brought to a halt in 2014.

The Freelander was conceived following some clever market research from the Rover Group in the late 1980s which suggested that Land Rover should enter the compact SUV market.

Due to budgetary restrictions, the Freelander struggled to get off the ground. Land Rover initially reached out to partners Honda to assist in the development, but they chose to it alone and develop their own CR-V model, so the British company were left to their own devices.

The floor plan had rather inauspicious beginnings and the floorplan was actually based on an Austin Maestro! BMW’s purchase of the Rover Group in 1994 gave the project added impetus and the Freeland was put into production at Rover’s Solihull facilities.

Launched in October 1997, the Freelander became Europe’s best-selling 4x4, a title it held until 2002.
