There has never been a better time to buy a used diesel car

There has never been a better time to buy a used diesel car.

That’s the conclusion, following research from Motorway.co.uk which showed that averages prices of used diesels fell by 5 per cent during 2017.

In the case of some brands it was much more. For example the price of a used BMW diesel car dropped by 12.8%, equating to an average slump of £2,000.

The price collapse has been attributed to an ‘anti-diesel hysteria’ from the government which hiked duty on new diesels in the Autumn Budget owing to environmental concerns.

However, older diesel vehicles are unaffected by the duty hike and data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers (SMMT) recently revealed signs that bargain-hunters were contributing to a recovery in the sector, with equivalent third quarter sales actually up 4.2% on 2016.

Just as more savvy buyers are refusing to be swayed by negative sentiment, it seems there is a fightback against the ‘demonisation of diesel’ from within automative industry itself.

Only last week, What Car?, the respected magazine title, awarded it’s prestigious 'Car of the Year’ award to the Volvo XC40, an SUV powered best by a diesel engine.

Editor Steve Huntingford used the occasion to take a swipe at the diesel critics, saying: “Our judging panel refused to be swayed by the anti-diesel hysteria and instead made their decision purely based on the merits of the cars.

“Our belief is that for many car buyers, diesel remains the right economic and environmental choice.”

At CarSupermarket.com, we offer thousands of used diesel vehicles for sale, all of which are NOT subject to the increased duty announced by the government (which only applies to new diesels).
