These Are The Safest New Cars Of 2022

Tue 18th Jan 2022

Safety standards in new vehicles are reaching new heights and thanks to research from Euro NCAP and Thatcham we now know which cars will deliver the biggest benefits to road safety.

Judges from Thatcham Research focused on affordability, with crash-avoidance systems, ‘passive’ occupant protection features and a commitment to standard fit across all models a key to winning the votes. The experts selected five vehicles which have led the way and met the criteria of providing safety benefits to the greatest number of drivers.

The safest new cars of 2022 are the Mercedes-EQ EQS, the Nissan Qashqai, the Skoda Enyaq, Polestar 2 and the Toyota Yaris Cross.

“It's fantastic to see carmakers continuing to prioritise safety, with all but four vehicles tested by Euro NCAP in 2021 achieving a four or five-star rating. Most are rising to the safety challenge and it’s encouraging to note EVs are performing very well as a group too,” said Matthew Avery, from Thatcham Research.

“As well as the development of active safety technology to help avoid crashes and protect vulnerable road users, we also welcome the continued introduction of passive safety innovations such as centre-airbags, which prevent occupants from colliding into one another during side impacts.”

These five vehicles will now form the shortlist for the 2022 What Car? Safety Award, with one overall winner and two runners up revealed on 20 January.

Claire Evans from What Car? was on the judging panel and was happy to see that the cars didn’t need to be expensive to be safe, she said: “The Qashqai and Yaris are affordable, popular models that will sell in large numbers and so enhancing road safety for their buyers and other road users. It’s also reassuring to see that specifically designed pure electric models, such as the Enyaq and Polestar 2 have impressive all-round safety credentials.”
