Toyota Celebrate Double Yaris Success

Mon 12th Jul 2021

The revolutionary new looks and stylings of the Toyota Yaris has won an army of new fans, while the sport performance of its beefier brother the GR Yaris has already caught the critics’ eye.

So it will come as no surprise that both cars have claimed honours at the Auto Express New Car Awards.

The Yaris hybrid has claimed the Affordable Hybrid of the Year prize, the second year in succession is has claimed that title. The Yaris was the first to be built on Toyota’s new fourth generation hybrid electric technology powertrain, delivering fuel economy of 68.8mpg and CO2 emissions of just 92g/km.

“The Yaris has always been a sensible and pragmatic supermini choice, but this latest version is far more than that,” said Steve Fowler, Auto Express editor. “Due to its excellent hybrid powertrain and a new architecture that makes it better to drive than ever before, it’s our favourite affordable hybrid for the second year in a row.”

While the hybrid is flying high, adding the Auto Express crown to the current European Car of the Year trophy, its sibling the GR Yaris is racking up an equally impressive list of accolades.

The GR Yaris was named UK Car of the Year in March and is now on the podium for the Performance Car of the Year. The GR has been specially adapted from Toyota’s World Rally winning championship team and comes with a 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine. An affordable rally car for the road.

The success of the GR Yaris is such that order books for the next two years are full in the UK - a real sell-out.

“The success of GR Yaris has been unprecedented,” said Stuart Sanders, Director of Communications at Toyota GB. “The huge public demand has resulted in all the new cars destined for the UK having now been snapped up for the coming 18 months. This isn’t the end of the story, however, as we are opening a new waiting list from next week so that prospective customers can put their name forward to be first in line when the next allocation of vehicles is confirmed.”
