UK Fakes World’s Best Roads

Holidays abroad are slowly getting back to normal, but for some of us there might still be limited opportunities to take to the open road and enjoy a driving vacation on the continent. But according to Alfa Romeo, for every great road journey around the world, there is a UK equivalent on our doorstep.

The Italian car brand has worked with Getty Images to identify ten of the most beautiful drives in the world, and provided a local lookalike.

Alfa Romeo polled the opinions of the brand’s exclusive Owners Club to understand which roads drivers would want to experience the most, and the breathtaking hairpin bends of Italy’s Stelvio Pass was ranked as the most spectacular.

It might cost a small fortune to drive to Italy with the current fuel prices, so using Getty Images analysis, they have identified a British road that has the same characteristics and that road is the Applecross Pass in Strathcarron, Scotland.

It’s a fact that Scottish roads dominate the counterfeit scenic drives, with the Trotternish Peninsula (Isle of Skye), A82 through Rannoch Moor (Glencoe), Isle of Mull and the North Coast 500 all making the top ten. Some might argue that these British equivalents are worthy of a place in the top ten themselves, but there are few iconic roads such as the Great Ocean Road (Australia) and Route 66 (United States).

“International travel is possible again after years of disruption but, judging by our findings, UK motorists don’t need to travel to the other side of the world to experience an iconic drive,” said Damien Dally, Managing Director of Alfa Romeo UK. “Our findings show the UK is home to epic landscapes and engaging roads that are tailormade for road trips in models like our Stelvio Quadrifoglio performance SUV or Giulia sports saloon.”
