The move, which is being phased in across the United States will see Volkswagen owners able to control a range of functions on their car using their Apple’s Siri app.

The new technology will connect the latest iOS software with Volkswagen’s Car-Net connectivity, which will allow virtual assistant Siri to control a number of functions remotely.

Volkswagen’s Chief Information Officer, said the connectivity will make for safer Volkswagen drivers as they will focus on the road rather than being distracted by their system.

He said: “We are constantly looking at innovative ways to make VW Car-Net more convenient and relevant for our customers.

“With Siri Shortcuts, creating voice commands to use with our mobile app was a great opportunity to do just that. Integration with Siri helps our drivers keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.”

Siri will be able to lock and unlock the car, check estimated mileage or charge left on the car and also enable the car to flash or honk to allow users to find their car better in a car park. Users will also be able to operate the defroster, and climate control settings.

Volkswagen’s Car-Net control system comes as standard on some of the company’s high-end vehicles and can be installed for £100 on lower-end cars when bought new, or for £215 for vehicles which don’t have the system already installed.

After being trialled in America it is expected that the tech will soon be available in the UK.
