Volkswagen Is Now UK’s Top Car Brand

Wed 12th Jan 2022

German car maker Volkswagen has topped the sales charts in the UK for the first time in its history, taking the crown from perennial best seller Ford.

Volkswagen have traditionally battled with Ford and Vauxhall for sales dominance over the last few decades, and though they have always shown strong market share due to the Polo and Golf, they have never been able to break Ford’s stranglehold on the top spot, mainly because they have gone head-to-head with the Fiesta and Focus.

But Ford have seen sales fall by 23 per cent in 2021, many due to the global microchip shortage, and while the issue has affected all manufacturers, it appears that the German brand have managed to ride out the storm better.

So while the Vauxhall Corsa has topped the most sales for one particular model, it is Volkswagen who have take the brand crown.

Sales dropped slightly for Volkswagen, but they still managed to register 147,826 new cars in what has been a difficult year. It was a year of German domination of UK sales, with VW’s sister-brand Audi grabbing second-place from BMW, Ford trailed in fourth.

VW’s Polo and Golf were neck and neck respectively, only 394 registrations separated the two iconic marques, but there was also a strong showing from the ID.3 electric hatchback.

“What a way to start the new year – as the UK’s biggest-selling car brand across 2021,” said Rod McLeod, the director of Volkswagen UK. “It’s a great achievement from all at Volkswagen UK, including from our fantastic network partners, as well as a clear reflection and ringing endorsement of the strength of our range offering.

“With a growing family of award-winning ID. models bolstering an already impressive range of class-leading products, it is an incredibly exciting time to be part of the UK’s most popular car brand.”
