VW Create A Buzz Around All-Electric Camper

One of Volkswagen’s most iconic vehicles, the camper van, is getting an all-electric upgrade as the German company announced plans for the ID Buzz EV.

The ID Buzz is based on the original 1950s Volkswagen Microbus, and is expected to be launched in the UK this Autumn, with both an MPV and van version available, and maybe even a pick-up version.

It’s expected that buyers will be paying £40,000 for the van version and up to £50,000 for the MPV format. Volkswagen will be launching further formats including a four-wheel drive and the much anticipated ID Buzz California camper van tribute over the next two years.

In a tweet on World Design Day, by VW’s design boss Klaus Zyciora, there could also be an open-top truck version, with the German manufacturer confirming that there was no limit to what might be available as there are a ‘lot of unseen design drafts’ based around the original concept.

“The ID. Buzz is a genuine icon for the electric era,” said Ralf Brandstatter, Volkswagen Chairman. “A car, the likes of which only Volkswagen can build. In the 1950s, the Volkswagen Bulli stood for a new feeling of automotive freedom, independence and great emotion. The ID. Buzz picks up on this lifestyle and transfers it into our time: emission-free, sustainable, fully networked and now ready for the next big chapter: autonomous driving.”

“The T1 – an icon of the 1950s – enabled people to gain mobility and freedom. With the ID. Buzz, we are transferring this T1 DNA to the present day and thus into the era of electric mobility,” says Jozef Kabaň, Head of Volkswagen Design. "The ID. Buzz brings a lot of sympathy and proximity to people back to the road," the chief designer continued.
